‘normal lives’ is the story of 18-year-old hedonist jordan larmour and his 31-year-old uncle gary thompson who has been freed from prison under the terms of the good friday agreement.
set in belfast, 1998, our story unfolds at a time of extraordinary tension, hope and trepidation as dance music and ecstasy began tearing down the ethnopolitical barriers in post-conflict northern ireland.
robbed of his childhood when his father was killed and his uncle was jailed, jordan’s been told he has a chance of a ‘normal life’ now that there’s peace. but electronic music and drugs have provided jordan with an escape from the grim realities of his mundane life in the loyalist ghettos of belfast.
jordan becomes a part of a subculture that achieves more than politics, paramilitaries and peace talks ever did in uniting a divided society and he finds companionship in mark and chucky, two catholic lads from the same part of the city but completely different worlds.
‘and for a few hours every saturday night it doesn’t matter what we are. dance music is our religion. the club is our church. the dj is god and ecstasy is our communion’.
but Jordan’s drug-fuelled escapism means he’s immersing himself in the dangerous northern irish underworld of paramilitarism, with the redundant ex-combatants struggling for control of the lucrative drugs business.
gary’s early release from prison under the terms of the good friday agreement reintroduces him into a society he does not recognise nor feel welcomed in.
struggling to assimilate into normal life and still haunted by the memories of the heinous crimes of his past, he attempts to kill himself.
it’s not until he’s reunited with his estranged nephew at his hospital bedside that gary realises his life still has a purpose. he will never be able to atone for the actions of his past but he might be able to steer jordan clear of a path of self-destruction, affording him a shot at a normal life.
when a drug deal goes awry and jordan’s friend chucky is in trouble, he turns to his uncle for help. but the ghosts from gary’s violent past could also spell a violent end and destroy their chances of ever leading normal lives.

'ghost island' in development with kinisi productions

in 1890 submarine coal seams are discovered under the remote hashima island off the coast of japan.
by the 1970s the island became the most densely populated place on earth packing over 13,000 people into each square kilometer of its high-rises.
the severe overcrowding caused flues and viruses which in turn affect the coal production, so its owners mitsubishi create a vaccine for the miners.
unfortunately, the vaccine mutated altering people’s immune systems, boosting their white blood cell production and creating a chronic iron deficiency in the blood and with it, an all-consuming craving for hemoglobin.
the company brought in blood bags from the mainland but couldn’t keep up with the miner’s ravenous demand.
by now most of the island had been inoculated with the vaccine, but it was too late as the blood starved residents were out of control and had started feeding on each other.
in late 1974 mitsubishi closed the mines, ceased mining and cleared the island of all the unaffected people, declaring the island off-limits and unsafe due to a catastrophic nuclear discharge.
then with the aid of the government secretly brought in troops to eliminate any survivors left on the island.
forty-six years later the deserted island lay derelict and abandoned until a disparate group of young people convinces a local fisherman to take them to explore the mysterious island.
